computerized personal assistant and therapist. Like Eliza, the famed psy chologist program that helped intro duce the world to AI, the NASAfunded Virtual Space Station simulator, being developed by the US National Space Biomedical Research Institute, asks simple questions. Going beyond Eliza, however, this program uses the an swers to build an assessment of the as tronaut’s mental state. Then it helps each crewmember develop healthy be haviors aimed at avoiding depression. It’s easy to imagine how medical diagnostic programs similar to the Vir tual Space Station could serve as useful tools in today’s overburdened health care system. But don’t count on getting an appointment with a virtual physician anytime soon. A medically sanctioned, earthbound version of NASA’s space craft therapist might be as far in the future as an actual mission to Mars. Indeed, although AI technologies now routinely help at everything from locating oil deposits to choosing what products to buy online, those tech nologies have yet to achieve a fi rm foothold in the medical fi eld. As with another IT application, electronic medical records (EMR), the healthcare industry has been slow to embrace AI. One reason is that the fi eld is subject to a bevy of regulations, which vary from country to country, and thor ough safetytesting of new treatments can take a decade or longer. Another is that many medical professionals are reluctant to abandon the traditional diseasetesting methods on which they have steadfastly relied.

IEEE INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS Except perhaps for the AI naysayers, AI practitioners are creators—of software artifacts, their underlying algorithms, and their underlying theories. We begin our feature with Herbert Simon, one of our three contributors (together with John McCarthy and Oliver Selfridge) who are our links to the landmark Dartmouth conference in 1956, where modern AI is often said to hav...
متن کاملAI at IBM Research
IBM has played an active role in AI research since the field’s inception more than 50 years ago. In a trend that reflects the increasing demand for applications that behave intelligently, IBM today carries out most AI research in an interdisciplinary fashion by combining AI techniques with other computing techniques to solve difficult technical problems.
